Regular sessions on the reformer correct muscle imbalances and promote a tall, aligned posture, essential for spine health.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some questions I'm asked a lot, you might find them helpful.

Who can do Pilates?

Everybody can do Pilates, its beauty lies in how adaptable it is to every client regardless of their fitness level or age. It is a matter of finding the right class and teacher to ensure you are being taught exercises appropriate to you. This makes it suitable for all levels, from complete beginners with limited mobility  to elite athletes.

Can Pilates help with back pain?

Thankfully yes, it can be very beneficial in reducing pain caused by muscular and skeletal issues. In fact most physios and doctors recommend it to build up deep core strength thus improving  back support, mobility and flexibility issues.

What class is suitable for me?

You should book into a Reformer Foundations class if you are new to R Reformer Pilates or to Pilates. Here you will learn the fundamental moves that will form the basis of all of your Pilates practice. Even seasoned practitioners should revisit the basics from time to time. Remember Pilates is a progressive movement practice, you are constantly layering exercises and looking to go a little deeper in your movement experience.

What is the difference between mat and reformer Pilates?

at and reformer Pilates feel completely different on your body and each one has its one benefits. The biggest difference with the mat is you only have your body weight to use as resistance, whereas the reformer is a machine equipped with springs and pulleys which you push or pull against thus providing you with both resistance and support.

It is a very safe form of training as you are not vertically loaded in a lot of  the positions so you can build up strength efficiently, whilst working on correct alignment and form.

Can I do Pilates with osteoporosis?

Yes a lot of the class exercises can be modified to be preformed  flexion free. In fact the dynamic loading of musculature can be very effective in helping build bone density. Just please advise of your teacher if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia so they can plan for you accordingly.

Can Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates will tone and strengthen your muscles but as with any exercise program you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight.

Is Pilates safe  during pregnancy?

Yes if you have previously being doing Pilates it is perfectly safe to continue as long as you have medical clearance from your Doctor and you have informed your teacher. If you are looking to start Pilates during pregnancy please find a post natal class suitable to your needs. Following on you are welcome to join a foundational 6 to 8 weeks post partum.

Can I do Pilates with an injury?

Yes absolutely, once you have had clearance from your Doctor or physio, but I do recommend starting with private sessions.  The reason Pilates has gained much popularity for those post injury or surgery is the adaptability of the method. In 1-on-1 sessions exercises are selected and can be modified to build a safe movement program specifically for your individual needs and provide the opportunity to learn how to move well outside the studio too. Pilates is the perfect modality to start regaining strength, retrain correct muscle recruitment and progress safely back to full capability
